The Tom Fazio-designed Hasentree Golf Club harkens back to simpler times, a straight-forward layout where shot value, course management, and a deft touch around the greens are key components, not necessarily power off the tee. The 7,074-yard, par-71 layout offers relatively wide fairways for a relaxing feeling with driver in hand, but Fazio strategically places 88 steep-faced bunkers in landing areas, tucks them around corners of doglegs and close to slick, sloping greens to test golfer’s skill levels as they play against a backdrop of beautifully framed holes.
“Hasentree has its own character and elements not found in some of my other courses,” Fazio said. “It has its own style, with 18 strong, hard golf holes. “There are a variety of settings for golf holes at Hasentree, up-and-down, right-and-left – the total package, which gives it that distinct North Carolina beauty.” Fazio begins the Hasentree round with a 466-yard par-4 that immediately grabs the attention of golfers and closes with an uphill 472-yarder that plays longer than measured. In between, one of the game’s most respected architects challenges players to keep their minds sharp and game under control to score well.
A unique feature from Fazio is a double green on the 10th hole and five par-3s, including one that measures 238 yards from the tips. Three of the four par-5s are reachable in two, a stimulating risk-reward feeling for golfers teeing it up amidst the rolling landscape of northern Wake County.
Fazio’s bunkers here present dramatic, big flashes and are filled with the same sugar-white sand used at Augusta National. The granular hazards are surrounded by zoysia grass to give a special look, feel, and additional test to the layout. Numerous varieties of fescue and native grasses planted along the periphery of the course complete the personal touch Fazio and his staff hope golfers of all ages will appreciate for decades to come.
